Rampa in September

Istanbul

Rampa Istanbul main gallery space hosts the show by Cengiz Çekil, titled “Temizlik Beziyle” (With a Cleaning Cloth) while in the upstair space the visitors will be able to see Nilbar Güreş’s “Açik Telefon Kulübesi”(Open Phone Booth) photo and video installation.Cengiz Çekil’s new work of 144 pieces has its roots in Çekil’s 1974 series titled “Takinti” (Obsession), which also references the theme of repetition. This new work manipulates the formal dynamics of the medium of painting, but the nature and quality of the material used in “Temizlik Beziyle” is some how in conflict with the systems and numbers the artist has constructed with its multiple repetitions. The form consists of a cleaning cloth, canvas, pieces of string, and hooks. On the background is paint and lace, differentiated from each other within the systems that Çekil has constructed based on the color of the paint and the different types of lace. Nilbar Güreş’s “Açik Telefon Kulübesi”(Open Phone Booth)had its world premiere at the 2011 Frieze Art Fair in London, but will be on view for the first time in Turkey.Pervaded of personal references, it is inspired by observations and experiences in one of the Alevi-Kurdish villages in Bingöl, still deprived of basic infrastructural elements such as roads, water, and telephone. As in “social realist” painting, the photographs are charged with the conceptual background of a pastoral atmosphere. Isolated from the daily life of the village, figures are brought together by the aesthetic contradictions and pragmatic applications that stand out for their poetic meaning. The three-channel video installation opens up with multiple perspectives the ironic situation that arises by the switchboard that was brought in the 1970s and became dysfunctional in the 1980s due to the conflicts in the region.Born in 1945, Cengiz Çekil grew up in Bor, in Central Turkey, after his studies abroad he came back to Turkey in 1976, His first solo exhibition at Rampa was held between May-July 2010. Curated by Vasıf Kortun, the project comprised works produced between 1974 and 2010. Çekil participated in important exhibitions such as the 4th and 11th Istanbul Biennale, Manifesta 5, a collective show at MoMA NY in 2011 Nilbar Güreş was born in 1977 in İstanbul, she studied in Austria wher she got her degree in Painting & Graphics from the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Junger that Çekil, she also has participated in many international important shows as the 11th Istanbul Biennale, the 6th Berlin Biennale. Nilbar Güreş lives and works in New York, USA.
