Davide D’Elia

TIEPIDO COOL, published by Viaindustriae Publishing, is the first publication in which Davide D’Elia’s artistic research from the last fifteen years is collected through a largely visual narrative that calls into question the book-object in its structure and physicality. The concept book is based on the poetic criterion introduced by the title Tiepido Cool: the two words (one Italian, the other English) dictate the sense of the progression of the works in a path that is more perceptive than chronological, articulating the artist’s research in keeping with a view that he himself wished to impose, to invite those who leaf through it to share a fluid reading in which works bounce off one another, weaving the very common thread that binds them.

After training as a visual designer and moving to London in the early 2000s as a creative artist, it was here that D’Elia began to focus on the themes of his aesthetic and formal investigation, those which – upon his return to Rome in 2011 – he became fully aware of. The book TIEPIDO COOL explores the artist’s work, attempting to unravel the complexity of a path that on the one hand welds together his two souls, and on the other is articulated in the space-time comparison of the two places that D’Elia has not only inhabited but experienced as key parts of his training. Perceived by the artist as antithetical, London and Rome become the two extremities of a discourse that converges at the centre, highlighting the duality on which his work hinges: while the ‘warmer’ works investigating the organic nature of matter (the works in which he cultivates moulds, such as Family, 2007, or the wallpapers removed in Louise, 2006-2011) sediment in the ‘cold’ London environment, vice versa those perceived as ‘cold’, right up to his most recent Fresco series, belong to the ‘Roman period’; at the centre is a cycle of works in which D’Elia takes on the lexicon of the buoy as the objectification of this necessary coexistence of two extremities.

Elisa Del Prete and Mike Watson are the two authors called upon to participate with two original texts, the upshot of their respective critical investigations and dialogue with the artist from different perspectives and latitudes: Elisa Del Prete follows D’Elia’s work ‘close up’, frequenting his studio and entering an intimate relationship with the works (she is the curator of the solo exhibitions Ri0 – ex-elettrofonica, Rome, 2021 – and FRESCO – Museo Davia Bargellini, Bologna, 2022), while Mike Watson, an interpreter of the Anglo-Saxon approach to art-historical studies, engages in a dialogue with the artist ‘from afar’, starting from his research into Walter Benjamin’s thought and the current effects on the relationship between culture and new media.

From warm to cold and viceversa, through a moderate aesthetic microclimate, a pleasant short circuit.

 Tiepido Cool All Over

Tiepido Cool All Over is the international tour of presentations and activities developed with the aim of exploring different contexts and visual cultures. In fact, the tour is conceived not only as an opportunity to present the book, but to make it a tool of relationship during workshops and activities designed starting from questions related to the artist’s research inspired by a Gestalt learning model, to investigate the relationship between cultural attitudes and perception in each context and with specific targets. Tiepido Cool All Over will close at the MAXXI Museum in Rome in spring 2023.
