The Distracted Exhibition. On Enchantment and Composting Archival Shreds

Pérez Art Museum Miami

Parodi Lecture in the Philosophy of Art with Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Artistic Director of documenta 13.

This lecture by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev explores the question of the art exhibition as an embodied and “dis-tracted” archive(dis / trahere = to pull or to draw in another direction), and it focuses on how objects function in relation to the experience of witnessing – the artist’s witnessing of the world, the viewer’s witnessing of the artwork, and even the art object’s witnessing of the spectacle within which it is caught and entrapped. dOCUMENTA (13) was both an art exhibition, a process and a state of mind. In it, the notion of archive was viewed with suspicion and pulled towards forms of symbiotic decomposition and recomposition – a cultural quasi-compost. With examples of artworks and projects created for dOUCUMENTA (13), including Mario Garcia Torres, Rossella Biscotti, Claire Pentecost, Michael Rakowitz, And And And, Adrian Villar-Rojas and Dihn Q Lee.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev was the Artistic Director of dOCUMENTA (13) and is guest professor in art theory and practices at Northwestern University, Evanston and Goethe University, Frankfurt.
